Fixing the front door

Hello OCRS families,

I hope that all of you were able to enjoy this long Memorial Day weekend. It's also a good opportunity for all of us to spend some time thinking about and honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces so that we may continue to enjoy our freedom. PBS Kids has a great video to help explain to kids the history and meaning of Memorial Day.

Schedule for this Week

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week will be typical online learning days following the schedule and routine that each classroom teacher has established. As a reminder, here are the days that have been added to the Smithfield and OCRS calendar through June 12th:

May 25th (Monday) - Memorial Day Holiday
June 1st (Monday) - Flexible Learning Day
June 12th (Friday) - Last Day of School

Virtual Spirit Days this Week

The response from students and families to our Virtual Spirit Days has been terrific and the entire school community has enjoyed seeing examples of our students' creativity, kindness, and hard work during this period of online learning. For a period of next three weeks we would like to set aside each Tuesday for OCRS students to show how they are following the OCRS School Rules of "Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Responsible" at home during online learning. We will focus on one rule each week. This week is Week #3.

Tuesday, "Be Responsible"

Think of an example of how you are following the OCRS School Rule of "Be Responsible" while you are at home participating in online learning. Some examples might be how you are being responsible by keeping your own online learning space and materials organized and ready to use. Another example for older students might be how you are responsible for your own online learning schedule each day so that you parents can concentrate on their own work schedule. There are so many ways that OCRS can be responsible at home during this period of online learning. With your family's help and permission, share your example with Mr. Barrette and your teacher!

Thursday, "Using Science in Daily Life"

Think of an example of how you use Science in your daily life. Some examples might be using science while gardening (where and how do you plant seeds, how do you make sure that plants survive and grow), cleaning up (why is it important to make sure to wash your hands with soap), or even playing outside (why do you sometimes see a rainbow after it rains). With your family's help and permission, share your example with Mr. Barrette and your teacher!

Some Activity Ideas for Kids

We know that it's been really difficult to keep kids busy while following the state guidelines for COVID-19. Since this week as a school we are thinking about "Using Science in Daily Life", here is a fun and simple science activity for kids for which you probably already have the materials at home. You may want to do this one outside! "Chemistry for kids: Make a DIY bubble snake".

Thank you,
Mr. Paul Barrette
