Hello OCRS families,
It's the first full week of March and we're getting ready for Daylight Saving Time to begin NEXT Sunday on March 10th and the beginning of spring later this month. Grades 3 through 5 are also going to begin spending time preparing for RICAS, the statewide ELA and Math assessments that will take place in April and May.
"Read Across America Week"
All five Smithfield schools are celebrating "Read Across America Week" during the week of March 4th. Each day we will have a different activity or way to celebrate reading for students and staff. Our STEM and Media Specialist, Mrs. Nonis, worked with her colleague at Pleasant View Elementary School to design the daily activities. These activities are scheduled to take place during the school day, but we would love to hear from families how you may have extended them at home after school! You can find a flyer with each daily activity linked. Here's a quick overview:

Wear a hat and spend some time tipping your hat to reading today!
🐷 Tuesday, March 5th, "Piggie and Gerald"
Reading is more fun when you do it with a friend. Spend some time Buddy Reading with a friend today.
🐦⬛ Wednesday, March 6th, "Don't Let The Pigeon Stay Up Late"
Snuggle up with a good book while wearing your favorite pajamas to school. No slippers please!
🏆 Thursday, March 7th, "Read Like a Champion"
Dress to support your favorite sports team and keep "scoring points" by spending time reading!
🔦 Friday, March 8th, "Reading Makes You Brighter"
When the lights in your classroom are dim, grab your flashlight and relax with a good book.
Integrated Preschool Open House
Families with preschool aged children are invited to attend the Smithfield Integrated Preschool Open House on Tuesday, March 5th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The Integrated Preschool Program for the entire district is located at LaPerche Elementary School at 11 Limerock Road and so the Open House will also be taking place at LaPerche School.
The Open House is an opportunity to meet the Preschool teachers, tour the classrooms, and ask questions about the program. Please see the linked flyer for more information. If you cannot attend the Open House, but still have questions about the Integrated Preschool program, please email childoutreach@smithfield-ps.org.
FREE screening of the film, “Screenagers: Growing Up In The Digital Age”
The district is hosting a free screening of the movie "Screenagers" on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 6:00 PM in the Smithfield High School auditorium. This event is recommended for families and students in 5th grade or older. PTA "Get Lucky" BINGO Hosted by the 5th Grade
The OCRS PTA 5th grade committee is running a "Get Lucky" BINGO night on Friday, March 15th at 6:00 PM. Please save the date and mark it on your calendar and more details will be shared in the near future.
The 5th Grade BINGO nights have been a LOT of fun in the past years because the 5th grade students run the event, announce the BINGO numbers, and assist with cards in the audience.
OCRS PTA Pasta Dinner, Thursday March 21st at 5:30 PM
The OCRS PTA is organizing a Family Pasta Dinner to be held on Thursday, March 21st from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM in the Smithfield High School cafeteria. The dinner includes Pasta and meatballs, Bread and Salad, and Dessert and Refreshments. There will also be 50/50 raffles, music, and other fun activities!
The cost will be $10 per adult and $8 per child. Children ages 3 and under will be free of charge. All proceeds are to benefit the OCRS PTA. Advanced ticket purchase is required using the link below or by scanning the QR code on the linked flyer.
