Hello OCRS families,
It's the LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL! We have an exciting week ahead with the 5th Grade D.A.R.E. and Step Up Celebration scheduled for Monday at 9:30 AM at the Smithfield High School Auditorium and the Kindergarten Celebration scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 PM in the OCRS gymnasium. Specific details of each celebration will be shared with 5th grade and Kindergarten families.
Distribution of Final Report Cards on Thursday, 6/15
Students' final report cards will be available to view through via online Campus Parent Portal after 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 15th. Parents and families can access the online Campus Parent Portal at https://smithfieldri.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/smithfield.jsp. Please see these linked Instructions on how to login and view your child's report card.
Report cards are based on year end goals, so the Final Report Card indicates progress demonstrated during this period of learning towards the year end goals. Teachers have worked together with their colleagues across the district to make sure that the information that parents receive accurately reflects the learning that is taking place.
Dr. Monaco, our assistant superintendent, has shared guides for families on the elementary report cards in the past. You can find links for each grade level guide below:

- 1st Grade Report Card Guide for Families
- 2nd Grade Report Card Guide for Families

If any family has questions or concerns about their child's final report card, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher.
If any family has difficulty logging into their Campus Parent Portal account, please email Mrs. Deus at mdeus@smithfield-ps.org or Mr. Barrette at pbarrette@smithfield-ps.org.
2023-24 School Year Calendar
The 2023-24 School Year Calendar is posted both on the district website and on the OCRS website.
Please use this calendar to plan family trips, events, and medical appointments on days when school is NOT in session. In the 2023-24 school year we will be continuing our school's focus on daily attendance for students and we want to make every effort to avoid any students being chronically absent (more than 10% of the scheduled school days) and referred to family court for truancy.
Summer Learning Information
Did you know that if students stop learning during the summer, they can lose more than two months of learning in reading and math? This is called summer learning loss and it occurs when students forget what they learned over the school year. Students who consistently fall behind due to summer learning loss throughout their elementary school years could wind up falling more than 2.5 years behind their peers by the end of fifth grade.
Ways to support your child’s summer learning experience:
- Encourage your child to read every day, use Lexia on their school Chromebook, and practice math using Freckle on their school Chromebook! (Freckle and Lexia will be available to students until 8/14)
- To use Lexia, go to Clever.com on your school Chromebook and choose Lexia Core 5
- To use Freckle, go to Clever.com on your school Chromebook, choose Renaissance then choose the Freckle tile
- Reach out to technosps@smithfield-ps.org if you have questions or difficulties logging in.
- In the linked grade level specific packets you will find several learning resources including: Summer Reading Bingo Challenge, a summer reading book log and Freckle instructions and practice log.
- See the online Smithfield Summer Learning Guide for additional summer learning opportunities including public library summer programs and recommended summer reading lists.
We hope you will join us by supporting and cheering on your student(s) as they strive to meet his or her summer goals! Please share the excitement with other parents, too!
Notes from our Nurse
Mrs. Forte would like to remind families that they need to make arrangements to pick up any student medications by this Friday, June 16th before 3:00 PM. The school is not able to keep student medication over the summer. Please call or email Mrs. Forte (cforte@smithfield-ps.org) with any questions.
Also, Mrs. Forte has noticed a number of students not eating breakfast and then complaining of stomach issues after participating in P.E. or recess. The school completely understands that everyone has their own daily routine and some students (and adults) prefer not to eat breakfast. However, if your child has frequently been complaining of stomach issues in the morning after running around AND they haven't eaten breakfast, eating breakfast before school may be something to consider to prevent future issues.
Please Let the School Know If Your Family is Moving
If your family is moving this summer (or has already moved) and your child will no longer be attending OCRS in the fall, please call the school office at 401-231-6613 or email Mrs. Deus at mdeus@smithfield-ps.org. We want to make sure to update our records and enrollments for next year AND prepare any student files that need to be sent to another school or district.
Upcoming Spirit Days
As we move into June, we would like to celebrate the end of each week with a special Spirit Day to give students and staff an opportunity to have some fun together. Here is the list of all of the Spirit Days for the remainder of the year.
Wednesday, June 14th - Red, White, & Blue Day (Flag Day)
Wear red, white & blue to celebrate Flag Day!
Thursday, June 15th - Sports Day
Come to school wearing gear for your favorite sports team!
Friday, June 16th - Hawaiian/Beach Day
Summer is almost here and celebrate the last day of school wearing your favorite Hawaiian/vacation outfit!
Chromebooks Sent Home with Students for Summer Learning
We will be sending home Chromebooks with students for the summer on Wednesday, June 14th to encourage summer learning. Each elementary student will be able to take home their school Chromebook, power adapter, and protective case over the summer. Younger students will also come home with their paper "Clever badge/barcode" which is what they use to login to their Chromebook.
Students can use their Chromebooks to participate in Summer Learning.
Rhode Island Summer Meals Program
The RI Summer Meals Program is offering free summer meals to teenagers and children. Please see the linked flyer for more details or call 211 for locations.
Rhode Island College Athletics Camp
Rhode Island College is hosting an athletics camp for kids during the summer. There is a per week cost, but it may be something that families would be interested in looking into. Please see the linked flyer for details. The schools did not receive the flyer until this week, otherwise we would have shared it with families earlier so you could have taken advantage of the "Early Bird" pricing.
Mr. Barrette's grandfather and youngest sister are both members of the Rhode Island College Athletics Hall of Fame, so we're proud to be able to partner with RIC Athletics!
