Toad on the deck

Hello OCRS families,

This was the warmest weekend, yet, so we know that summer is slowly but surely making its way to Smithfield. I was very grateful for lots of opportunities to get outside this weekend, even if part of that time meant mowing my lawn. I actually had a little friend join me on my deck this afternoon!

Schedule for this Week

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week will be typical online learning days following the schedule and routine that each classroom teacher has established. This Wednesday is a "Flexible Learning" Day for all Smithfield elementary students; please see below for more details. As a reminder, here are the days that have been added to the Smithfield and OCRS calendar through June 12th:

May 20th (Wednesday) - Flexible Learning Day
May 25th (Monday) - Memorial Day Holiday
June 1st (Monday) - Flexible Learning Day
June 12th (Friday) - Last Day of School

Wednesday, May 20th is a "Flexible Learning" Day

This Wednesday, May 20th, is a "Flexible Learning" Day for all Smithfield elementary students. There is online learning for students on Wednesday, May 20th, but there won't be any "live" teaching via video because the teachers and staff will be participating in professional development and collaboration on Wednesday.

  • Teachers will post a few low-key activities in Google Classroom or SeeSaw (K-2) for students to engage in on Wednesday. Some examples will be to finish up owed work, spend time completing STEM and Itinerant projects, read to someone in your house (or read silently), play a math game, draw something that you learned about this week, etc.
  • Students do NOT need to adhere to any specific schedule or time requirements this Wednesday. We know that students and families may appreciate a less structured and asynchronous learning day.
  • Please don't forget to sign your child into the online attendance form on this Wednesday because Smithfield and RIDE are still counting this Wednesday as a school day.

Virtual Spirit Days this Week

The response from students and families to our Virtual Spirit Days has been terrific and the entire school community has enjoyed seeing examples of our students' creativity, kindness, and hard work during this period of online learning. For a period of next three weeks we would like to set aside each Tuesday for OCRS students to show how they are following the OCRS School Rules of "Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Responsible" at home during online learning. We will focus on one rule each week. This week is Week #2.

Tuesday, "Be Respectful"

Think of an example of how you are following the OCRS School Rule of "Be Respectful" while you are at home participating in online learning. Some examples might be how you are being respectful of parents that may need to work from home, of brothers and sisters that are also learning from home, or just making sure to use respectful words with family members, even when you're driving each other crazy! With your family's help and permission, share your example with Mr. Barrette and your teacher!

Thursday, "Using Math in Daily Life"

Think of an example of how you use Math in your daily life. Some examples might be using fractions while cooking or baking, adding and subtracting if you're helping family members shop online, or even figuring out how many minutes left you have to play outside during lunch! With your family's help and permission, share your example with Mr. Barrette and your teacher!
