5th grade reptiles

Hello OCRS Families,

I hope that all students were able to take some this past week to relax and enjoy the time off from school. Personally, I appreciated the opportunity to spend time with my own family and to catch up on some reading.

Important Information

Thank you to the OCRS PTA

A big "thank you" to the OCRS PTA for all that they do to make our school better for our students. In the week before vacation alone:

  • The PTA put together centerpieces for the cafeteria tables for the "Loved Ones for Lunch" event
  • The PTA organized the purchase and delivery of carnations for Valentine's Day and made sure that no OCRS student was left out
  • The PTA supported the 2nd grade field trip to the Providence Children's Museum and two in-school wildlife experiences for the 5th grade
  • The PTA launched the new OCRS Spirit Gear website at https://jandrstores.com/oldcountyroad/

We are so fortunate to have an active PTA at OCRS and I know the PTA is planning a series of terrific family events for the remainder of the year. Please follow them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/OCRSPTA/ to stay up to date.

Thank you for "Loved Ones for Lunch"!

Thank you to all of our students' "loved ones" that made time in their schedules to join us for lunch during the week before vacation. It's been a few years since OCRS has hosted an event like this and it was great to have family members join us for lunch. Our students loved having guests for lunch and they enjoyed the decorated cafeteria tables. With the cooperation and support of our food service provider, we DEFINITELY want to make this type of event an annual tradition!

I do want to apologize for a mistake that I made during the end of the 4th grade lunch. I accidentally ended the 4th grade lunch a few minutes early which made for a very abrupt finish to the lunch for the 4th grade families and students. That was my mistake and I will work with staff on a smoother transition process for next year.

How can you volunteer at school?

Returning from a school vacation is a perfect time to remind interested parents and guardians about how to volunteer at school. In order to volunteer, a parent, guardian, or grandparent needs to have an up to date background check on file with the school district (within the last calendar year) and have completed volunteer training at least once (the training does not need to be completed every year).

This year, parents have volunteered as field trip chaperones, to support special classroom events, and to help out in the cafeteria during lunch (particularly for the younger students). If you are interested in volunteering at school, please see the Volunteer Handbook on the OCRS website at https://5il.co/a6s0 for additional information. Another terrific way to volunteer is to become involved in the OCRS PTA!

Upcoming Dates and Events

OCRS Spirit Day, Monday February 24th

Each and every Monday we are encouraging OCRS students and staff to wear their OCRS Spirit Gear to school!

5th Grade Recital Night, Wednesday February 26th at 6:00 p.m.

5th grade student musicians from all four elementary schools will be performing in a "5th Grade Recital Night" on Wednesday, February 26th at 6:00 p.m. at the Smithfield High School Auditorium. The students that volunteered to perform and have rehearsed their performance would love to have you in the audience cheering them on! Thank you Mrs. Preston for offering 5th grade students this wonderful opportunity.
